About the event

The sailors’ valentine legend began in the 1800s when a sailor decided to use his collection of seashells to create a mosaic. As the story goes, he found an eight-sided compass case and, using dark and light shells, wrote “To My Valentine.” When the sailor returned home from his voyage, he presented his gift to his love. These romantic creations encompass the spirit of love and devotion for those we hold dear.

In this class, students will learn the step-by-step process of creating a sailor’s valentine, as well as a shell flower to incorporate into the design. This is a beginner level shell mosaic class and is designed to give students a basic understanding of design, tools, and materials. Students will take home their own sailor’s valentine and be able to incorporate what they have learned to create more intricate mosaic designs on their own.
